Search newherenowlive.com for Charles Jenkins Biography After four albums with Australia’s most critically-acclaimed band the Icecream Hands, frontman Charles Jenkins is unleashing his solo debut and heading to Europe for the first time.
Charles’ solo debut follows the release of the Icecream Hands’ Broken UFO, which led to an ARIA nomination (the Australian equivalent of the Grammys) and had the critics searching for superlatives:
The Sydney Morning Herald said: “Lyrics that mean something, harmonies rich and giving, and sheer beauty in so many elements … Broken UFO has more going for it than just about any Australian release this year.”
The Melbourne Age agreed, saying: “A band with a wide musical palette … one of the best albums of the year.”
The music press raved, too, with Inpress declaring: “This is album of the year and by a bloody big way.”
Broken UFO followed the similarly acclaimed albums Sweeter Than The Radio, Memory Lane Traffic Jam, and Travelling … Made Easy.
The Icecream Hands are also critical faves in the US, where pop magazines and websites compare their records to the classic guitar pop of the ’60s and ’70s. One review said: “Icecream Hands manage to provide a latter-day link to the records of The Kinks, Small Faces, Zombies etc, in terms of the charm and skill of the songwriting, while infusing their material with a contemporary and unique edge.”
The band has had releases throughout Europe and the US, performing at the SXSW Festival, as well as shows in New York and L.A. But this is Charles’ first visit to Europe, where he has been invited to play at the Music Of The Southern Hemispheres (MOSH) Festival.
Halfway through recording his first solo album, Charles will release the Rough European Summer EP, to coincide with the tour.
After a decade fronting “the nation’s greatest melodic guitar pop band” (Sydney Morning Herald), the solo release showcases Charles’ acoustic side, reflecting his solo shows – warm, charismatic and idiosyncratic.
