opens this Thursday, 24 Mar at 7pm. Duckboard House
Hollywood takes our dreams and sells them back to us, telling us life should be some warmly lit feel-good romantic comedy but the truth is, in the infinitely less attractive fluroscent light of reality, it's more of A Dog's Breakfast. The search for love consumes us all, at least Hollywood got that part right, and even those running barefoot through broken glass shouting 'yippy cay aye motherf***er' and blowing up foreigners in black skivvies are only doing so to get the girl in the end.
But if stand up comedian Joanne Brookfield knows anything about this god forsaken life it's that what you want isn't always what you get. Love Actually? No. More of a Mess, Really.
A big, fat stinkin' mess....This is Joanne's first solo show for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and if she finally yields to her homicidal impulses, which are increasing in intensity as she gets older, it may also be her last.
A Beautiful Day? Blow it out your arse Bono....it’s A Dog's Breakfast.
A Dog's Breakfast premiered to sold out audiences as part of the 2003 Melbourne Fringe Festival, winning over both audiences and critics alike:
"blast of fresh air" - The Age; "an excellent debut" - Buzzcuts; "a natural" - InPress.
Demand for tickets from the general public was so great that on Opening Night even her own sister couldn’t get in. The show has just returned from a full season at the 2004 Adelaide Fringe festival:
"hilariously expressed love angst..a damn good laugh" - Rip It Up
"outstanding comedy both in her material and presentation" - DB magazine
"Brookfield hold's the distinction of being a stand up who's easy to relate to" - Fresh FM
Joanne worked primarily as an arts and entertainment journalist until began performing stand up in April 2002 and says “there’s been no turning back, just like when my dog does a pooh on someone’s doormat”. She is fast establishing a reputation as a rising star - “Joanne Brookfield is sure to move on to bigger and better things” Buzzcuts - and also runs two of Melbourne’s most successful independent comedy rooms, The Comedy Lair and High Voltage.
"A Dog's Breakfast is a finely written piece... While she may not be blessed in matters of love, Brookfield is certainly blessed with the gift of the gab. She is a born storyteller with an innate sense of comic timing and a delivery that alternates between razor sharp cynicism and endearing optimism" - InPress Joanne Brookfield Website: http://www.joannebrookfield.com |
