Search newherenowlive.com for Eva Popov Biography Melbourne singer/songwriter Eva Popov writes songs to speak intimately with an audience, navigating a wide musical territory with the simple means of guitar and voice. Her combination of intricate finger style guitar with poetic, honest lyrics recently won her first prize in the Apollo Bay Music Festival’s Young Songwriter’s Competition. She mostly performs solo but is often accompanied by guests such as slide guitarist Nick Huggins (Ruby’s Grace) and violinist Jake Bovill (The Long Walk Home).
Eva has been playing music for most of her life. She started learning the piano when she was five, leading to fifteen years of classical training including a year of full time study at the VCA. During this time she became disheartened with the loneliness of classical piano, and left to chase music elsewhere. She brushed off the guitar songs she’d accumulated during her teens and learnt that songwriters could explore music freely and engage with an audience in a way she couldn’t as a pianist.
In her two years as a performer she has played close to a hundred gigs in and around Melbourne, including venues such as the Rob Roy, The Evelyn and The Cornish Arms. In 2002 one of her songs was selected to be on the Songs of St. Kilda compilation which received airplay on several local community stations. Her debut EP “Photos of the Sun” is an independent release which will be launched in late August. It has already begun receiving airplay on PBS and RRR radio stations. Selected tracks are available to be downloaded on her website and she is selling the ep at performances and select cd stores around Melbourne. Eva Popov Website: http://www.evapopov.com |
