Biography
Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea – Dead Wood Falls.

In April 2005 Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea arrived with the song Rain, a lovelorn ballad dedicated to the themes of American writer Raymond Carver’s work – loneliness, redemption and a dark unapologetic humour. Rain touched a nerve with listeners, propelling the band into a constant touring schedule with artists such as Ben Lee and Mia Dyson.

Their debut Ep Permanent Marker received glowing reviews from music critics. Chosen by Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill as his ‘pick of the week’, earning itself a place on the 2005 Home and Hosed compilation. But it was in the live arena where fans were able to see the band deliver. With three national tours in 2005, as well as numerous high profile supports for the likes of Tex Perkins, Paul Dempsey, Pete Murray, Alex Lloyd and Missy Higgins, Jen Cloher and The Endless Sea established themselves as one of the most sought after bands on the live scene.

Hailing from Adelaide, Cloher moved to Sydney in her late teens to tread the boards at esteemed acting academy NIDA. Whilst studying, Cloher purchased her first second-hand guitar, cutting class in favour of writing songs in the ladies change rooms. Upon graduating Cloher headed south to Melbourne where she formed her band The Endless Sea: Jen Sholakis (Drums), Lord Geoffrey Dunbar (Bass), Andrea Sumner (Violin) and Michael Hubbard (Guitar).

2006 heralds the follow up to the successful Permanent Marker Ep, with the release of their debut album Dead Wood Falls. Re-uniting with producer Paul McKercher (Augie March, Eskimo Joe, You Am I) the album was recorded over 5 days live to tape at Melbourne’s infamous Sing Sing Studio’s. “The thing I love the most about this record is that it is, essentially, a live recording”, Cloher enthuses. “You get what was happening right there, right then, between a group of likeminded artists and you can’t reproduce that sound”.

What the critic’s say:

‘Dead Wood Falls is an astonishingly accomplished debut – delivering abundant cause for Jen Cloher to be counted among this country’s very brightest of young things.’ Inpress.

'Moody blues-touched minimalism around aching lyrics...with a voice seemingly built for loneliness Cloher impresses.' Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald.

'What can I say about Jen Cloher and her band which isn't already mind numbingly obvious to those who have seen them play before? Fucking brilliant are two words that come to the fore - big things are on the horizon for these guys.'
Beat.
