Biography
There’s an unspoken connection that can only come from sharing a family’s history.

Brother sister duo, Angus & Julia Stone from Sydney’s Northern Beaches take a lifetime of shared experience and create music that resonates with emotion and honesty. A pure sound that says a lot without trying.

On their debut EP Chocolates & Cigarettes they showcase their considerable talents on six songs filled with sun kissed harmonies and evocative lyrics. All performed with a laid back, effortless charm. The shuffling drumbeats and percussion are provided by the backbone of the group Mitchell Connelly with Angus and Julia taking care of lead vocals, and guitar plus harmonica, piano and trumpet.

Angus and Julia’s decision to collaborate was taken in February of this year. Prior to this both had performed as solo artists, principally at open mic nights but with each using the other as a backing partner. Ultimately they came up with the same idea, “why don’t we play together? It kind of made a lot of sense”. The majority of the songs on Chocolate & Cigarettes were recorded at their home where they played and recorded everything live. In terms of composing the material, they write on their own, then work together on structure and harmonies. It’s clearly a process that works.

With Triple J picking up on Paper Aeroplane off the EP very early, they went on to announce signing a record deal in August with EMI Australia. Word has continually and rapidly spread following a series of acclaimed performances including Splendour in the Grass where they played to 2000 captivated punters. “Angus and Julia are going to be a sibling duo that are going to matter more than most” Brag, Sydney.

The time felt right for a trip to the UK which has proved highly successful. Angus, Julia and Mitch based themselves in London having already landing themselves a record deal with fiercely independent label Independiente, home to other artists such as Gomez, Travis and Martina Topley-Bird. They played numerous shows and appeared in industry magazine Music Week three weeks in a row, steadily winning the hearts of many a journalist and Londoners.

A review in Fly after a performance at the Borderline offered “... Julia’s voice hovers between Hope Sandoval soft and Kristin Hersh brittle. Angus’s Paul Simonish tones buoying “Mango Tree” and balancing this short but affecting set on a pinhead ...”

Johnny Sharp journalist for Q & MOJO wrote “Most Impressive, though are the songs – simple but blindingly effective acoustic compositions, warm boy-girl harmonies and delicate, less-is-more arrangements. Resistance is surely futile”

Music isn’t where the creativity stops, the band directed and shot their own video for Paper Aeroplane and their new clip Private Lawns. Both can be viewed now on www.myspace.com/angusandjuliastone. Mitchell also acts as the bands official photographer and his brother Ioshva looks after their website and artwork.
